Pre-Order:PSYCHE’S AWAKENING: A Guide to Emotional & Somatic Healing Through the Wisdom of Greek Myth

Pre-Order

Ancient Greek mythology meets the best of today’s psychological insights for a hero’s journey you won’t soon forget: your own.

It’s a tale as old as time: a seeker steps out from the familiar into the unknown, facing great danger on the way to enlightenment. While in ancient myth the hero must slay a monster, in real life you must conquer the challenges within. This emotional quest invokes an inner alchemy, transforming wounds into wisdom, shame into self-forgiveness, and pain into purpose. In Psyche’s Awakening, psychotherapist Gillian O’Shea Brown turns to these epic dramas as mirrors and maps guiding you to rediscover powers of resilience and wisdom within waiting to be claimed.

The Greek myths are some of the most enduring stories of all time because their archetypal energies are alive in us today, woven into our psyche and shaping our thoughts, behaviors, and experiences as we move through life. We have much to learn from Medusa’s body-based trauma, Sisyphus’s endless pattern pain (known as “the bite that fits the wound'), Pygmalion's boundary work and emotional walls, Icarus's efforts to balance the dignity of risk with the duty of care, and Chiron’s transformation beyond trauma in becoming “the wounded healer.”

Through vibrant mythical retellings and evidence-based, trauma-informed psychological insights, Psyche’s Awakening will support your journey with:
Somatic exercises such as breathwork, body scans, and grounding rituals. Guided tools for charting your erotic-emotional map. Techniques for social pruning and revitalizing your relationships. Compassionate shadow work and self-healing practices. As Gillian writes, “The greatest adventure you will ever embark on is the journey back to yourself. This path is rich with unexpected twists, turns, heartbreak, fear, and the vital experience of learning to release what no longer serves you.” This book is your map to this sacred awakening.

The Approach

Hey there! I am Dr. Gillian O'Shea Brown, author of Psyche's Awakening. I am a complex trauma psychotherapist and  adjunct assistant professor  at NYU.

Whether you are a survivor of trauma, clinician or a supportive family member I am here to guide you in understanding, treating and healing from the wounds of complex trauma. This space is about psychoeducation, self-empowerment and healing.

By healing I mean facilitating the compassionate witnessing of the self so that you can see beyond the wounds to who you truly are in the world! In the words of Rumi - “The wound is the place where the light enters you”. Akin to Rumi’s ancient wisdom as counterintuitive as it may sound from tragedy and trauma can come opportunity. The loss of stability and security allows room for growth, adaptation and evolution. Trauma creates a need for growth to aid survival and with this develops a greater capacity to find positive meaning in the face of adversity. To facilitate the journey of turning wounds into wisdom I use a personalized blend of integrative mind body approaches including EMDR, IFS, TF-CBT, Yoga and Somatic Techniques.

Furthermore, my doctoral research at NYU Silver has enriched my understanding of attachment injury acquired through adverse childhood events and the treatment of complex layered trauma in adulthood. Clients are guided in a journey of self-exploration with a focus on achieving positive and meaningful change in their lives.

I help clients realize not only their goals but their potential to live life more fully. Clients are encouraged to gain a better understanding of their subconscious drives and motives. Ultimately, we work together in striving to enhance self-awareness and to promote both self-exploration and personal growth.
